The famous Minolta Dynax 7 (film) camera had STF simulation built-in. But it played with focus and apperture during the exposure. Maybe the details are still available somewhere on the net.

You can most probably reconstruct that approach using multiple exposures.

Yes and no... all the same, multiple exposures compositions are impractical for 99.999% of what I do.
