Patent has been filed let's see if it will see it on the market.

Should be a huge thing

100mm front element isn't that bad. I'm very interested if this happens and can see myself slimming down on other zooms.

well the replacement could well be a 24-300 which makes more sense

Not very likely. Is a sherpa included?

Why does everyone assume it'll be massive. It'll be in the 300/2.8 or 400/4 ball park. Sure, not lightweight compact travel lens, but not silly size and weight either.

24-300 might be more believable as a 28-300 successor, but a 28-560 is a new class. I'd love a longer >10x zoom lens. The old 35-350L was more interesting to me than the 28-300L, and there's Sigma's 50-500 also.

"Slimming down" with this thing? Well, only in the metaphorical sense. Smile

Right now, I'd typically go with a two body setup to have both reach and wide angle at short notice. If one lens will do that good enough, it also saves needing the 2nd camera. Currently I'd do 15-400 on APS-C, so roughly 24-640 full frame. A single lens doing 28-560 will substantially cover that, and I can choose to modify it by body also.

I would use two bodies (with a 15-85 and 100-400 presumably) before I would decide to carry a single bazooka lens (and a lens that does 560mm at the long end cannot be anything else, especially at f/5.6 aperture). YMMV. Smile Actually I've done dual wield with a 16-35 and 70-200 and it's a great thing to do, very comfortable and adds a degree of failsafe.

(I've noticed that you're at exactly 1300 posts and I'm exactly at 900 now. LOL)

Zoom lenses are always a compromise concerning image quality, the higher the zoom ration, the bigger the compromise.
