Still very good on a full format DSLR.

Thanks for the reviews!

This is a lens I have owned for several months, and all round it seems like one of the best Zeiss offerings. In field usage, my experiences concur with the results of the PZ tests. It's an extremely reliable and consistent performer.

I was a little surprised at the slightly lower rating given to the 85/1.4 because in the field it is an awesome performer. My absolute favorite lens for street photography and portraits. The softness up to f1.8 is actually an advantage for me in portrait situations because of the inherent 'harshness' of many high-end moderns lenses and DSLRs. It provides flattering results without the need for processing.

CZ ze 5omm macro seems to be very good lens indeed. I have used many Zeiss Contax lenses with eos af-confirmed adapter and have been very satisfied with them (28 2.8 distagon, 45 mm pancake, 50mm 1.7, 60mm s-planar macro and 85 2.8 sonnar).

Do you know if the 50mm ze macro is designed after the structure of 60mm s-planar, or does it have the structure of it´s own?

I think my 60mm s-planar macro is one of the best of the lenses I have ever used, in bar with Canon 300 f2.8 L Is, Canon 200 f2.8, Canon 100 mm macro L Is and Zeiss ze 21mm distagon.

I have a friend who has all the L primes and ZE lenses and this lens is the one he is using the most.

he's a lucky guy. <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

But yes, it's a very versatile lens. Certainly one of the best all-rounders in my opinion. Personally I use my Voigtländer 40/2 more because it's very handy - but optically it's not up to the Zeiss 50/2 by a long way.

I might be tempted myself but the lack of AF is a deal breaker AFAIAC.
