Well the 24f2 was announced a long time ago; the other two seem like they might be interesting. Any idea who makes them or if they are unique sony/minolta designs ? I.e, will they have reasonable performance ? (Hard to see how they can mess up a 85f2.8 but the 35f1.8 is more interesting; bit surprise here Minolta had an excellent 35f2 wonder why they didn't just put it back into production).

Bleh just realized the 35f1.8 was DT. Very bleh. No clue what Sony is aiming for here.

They are filling holes in their lineup.

Sony have been criticized for lacking a wide-angle Zeiss primes and affordable primes.

85f2.8 & 35f1.8 are for A2xx A3xx A5xx users.

35f1.8DT seems fine for that market, but I'm surprised that the 85 is only f2.8.

Interesting updates.

The DT35 and 85 seem to partially address Sony's α mount weaknesses against Pentax APS-C, 4/3 and μ4/3's - small moderate size/price primes. They also address the fact that the Voigtlaender SL/SL-II series is not available in Alpha mount.

The DT35/1.8 seems to compete against small APS-C normal lenses like the Pentax FA35/2, DA35/2.8 Macro Ltd and DA40/2.8, the VL Ultron 40/2, the Lumix G 20/1.7 Asph.

The 85/2.8 seems to compete with other small moderate aperture short teles available for some other systems, such as the Pentax DA70/2.4 Ltd and the Voigtlaender APO Lanthar 90/3.5. The fact that it is not DT only is probably simply that the full-sensor lens was small and cheap enough without having to shrink it further.

One thing that is weird is that these 2 new lenses would be really nice compact lens focal length additions to the NEX system (NEX 16/2.8 + DT 35/1.8 + 85/2.8 would be a sweet triplet) ... except the α adapter for NEX mount (what the heck is the mount called?) doesn't support AF of α lenses?

I think they want to offer AF with SSM/SAM lenses via adapter ... eventually.

I haven't gone into detail but price indication has been posted on other sites.

The 35mm should sell well. Assuming the street prices are lower than list prices as is typical, then it is roughly comparable to Nikon's equivalent, with Canon lacking such a model. The more expensive f/2 full frame models are not really a direct comparison.

I have some trouble understanding the 85mm. Its plus points are it seems very compact in size and cheaper than the f/1.8 models from other manufacturers. Is this a case of less is more?
<a class="bbc_url" href="http://snowporing.deviantart.com/">dA</a> Canon 7D2, 7D, 5D2, 600D, 450D, 300D IR modified, 1D, EF-S 10-18, 15-85, EF 35/2, 85/1.8, 135/2, 70-300L, 100-400L, MP-E65, Zeiss 2/50, Sigma 150 macro, 120-300/2.8, Samyang 8mm fisheye, Olympus E-P1, Panasonic 20/1.7, Sony HX9V, Fuji X100.

Well, I reckon they've realized that they've mostly sold budget DSLRs so these 2 cheaper lenses fit in perfectly.

The A700 is discontinued with no replacement.

That's what I call odd marketing - no upgrade model in the middle.

As to an upgrade model in th emiddle, well, either it wasn't a popular model, or maybe there will be an announcement closer to the Photokina, who knows? <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Kind regards, Wim
Gear: Canon EOS R with 3 primes and 2 zooms, 4 EF-R adapters, Canon EOS 5 (analog), 9 Canon EF primes, a lone Canon EF zoom, 2 extenders, 2 converters, tubes; Olympus OM-D 1 Mk II & Pen F with 12 primes, 6 zooms, and 3 Metabones EF-MFT adapters ....

The A700 was popular with enthusiasts. The only "problem" with it is that was released in late 2007, about the same time and positioning as the Canon 40D to give an indication to its age now. It's way overdue replacement. The surprise was when they discontinued it there wasn't a replacement for it, leading to the gap today. The best crop camera they do now is the A550, which is consumer level e.g. closer to D90 or xxxD. The lack of A700 replacement contributed to me switching from Sony to Canon at that point.

Anyway, the lower cost new lenses will probably go down well with those lower body Sony owners, especially the 35mm... if I was still on Sony, I'd probably have the 30mm f/2.8 macro by now but would still want this 35mm for the aperture. Actually, Canon, please can you do a version of these two lenses too? <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />
