I was thinking of that lens but I there is no review of it here. Do any body have experience with it?

I'm doing mostly portrait an landscape but I would like to start doing some Macro, would it be a good choice?

Actully I have a 50mm F1.8 and a 18-55mm F3.5/5.6 both Nikon, operating on a Nikon 5100. I really like the 50 in portrait. I not really impress with the performance of the 18-55, especially on sharpness, but at that price you can't expect the best from a lens.

So any comments or other suggestion?

Thanks Xastoul

Thank never thought of checking in the Canon section...<img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

The review is a bit deceiving.... I think I'll go back to my first thought and start with something like the 40mm F2.8 Macro form Nikon and see where I'll go from there. I'll probably have a better Idea of what I want when I'll start play with that thing.

The 40mm Macro sounds like an excellent idea <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Good, I tought I better of start with fixed focal length to have a better quality and a lower price. I just don't want to invest a lot on a lens and end up with something I don't need or don't fit to what I'm doing.

Thanks

For portraits, I'd get the 50 f/1.8 G.

It's very affordable and offers great bokeh control at f/1.8. It's also quite good wide open already.

Otherwise, I own the Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 (old version, supposedly sharper than the OS version) and I find it to be an excellent lens. Stop it at f/4 and it's excellent and even f/4.5 at 70mm is sharp enough for portrait. At f/5.6 it's tack sharp through the whole focal length. Plus, you get pseudo macro which is extremely convenient. It can still focus when the subject is 1cm from the front lens element! To me, it's the most versatile lens I own as it combines a great range, good sharpness, pseudo macro, it's 2.8 from 17 to 21mm and it features good bokeh, flare resistance and CA control. If only it was weather resistant <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

These were all shot with it:

Thank a lot Florent, you some real nice shot there!

I already have the 50 f\1.8G. I really like it. I was aboutto get the 40 macro but found out that it almost impossible to find a Nikkor those days.

I'll try to find the sigma and test it. I'll see how it goes from there.

Thank again for your advise!

sorry for the late respond, I was a bit busy with my work... <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

If you can't get a 40mm Nikkor where you are, try B&H in New York. They have good selction and prices.

Thank for the tip Vieux Loup, But since I want to try it before.... I'll check if I can rent one somewhere. They have great price. I'm presently in Us so I'll check here and if I find nothing, I'll try that when I go back in Canada.
