Forums > Back > next PZ Lens Test Report: Samyang 14mm f/2.8 IF ED AS
#11
If I use a 14mm for landscape pictures (not arcitecture) on FF (so AF is not necessary and distorsion could be corrected in post), why I should go for the 14L instead for the Samyang?

I cannot find any reason...

Moreover, if I should buy a wide angle lens for architecture, maybe I'd go for the TS-E 17mm instead of the 14L.

This is the demonstration that there is a way to build high quality lenses at and affordable price.

How about filters? Filters are so important for landscape photography as I know.

"The front element has a "bulb"-like shape, a fairly popular approach these days. It seems to help to control the rather tricky optical problems inherent to ultra-wide angle lenses. On the downside it's not possible anymore to mount front filters for obvious reasons."

Ya gotta read the review, silly! <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />

But there might be a solution using no-screw filters ...?

Anyway, looks like a very good lens for the money. Just a question for any wide-angle experts out there: does the moustache distortion tend to become more pronounced when the shooting angle deviates from 90 degrees?

This lens is quite interesting in the trade offs that were made. Basically is serves the purpose, which is to deliver high sharpness over the field of view at a cheap price, so it's a winner.

IMHO a few things make this low price and high performance possible, by allowing a relatively simple overall design:

- No electronics, no AF, no coupling... who cares? It's a wide angle for landscapes!

- Plenty of uncorrected distortion. Again, for most natural landscapes who cares?

- Small aperture far from the center (high vignetting)[sup]*[/sup].

[sup]*[/sup]This is also why some large format lenses perform so well off their centers: they have a very small aperture. The diaphragm is effectively stopping the light pencils which would be distorted otherwise, resulting in very high vignetting. This is probably why the lens performs well wide open in the corners in terms of sharpness because of vignetting, not despite it <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />

I am very pleased with this lens based on the first shots I took today immediately after receiving it (thanks PZ for the review!). I paid 460 USD delivered to Canada from the USA, and it is under the Bower brand. I used the lens in Av mode and Manual on my 5D II, and it is wonderful to focus with and my exposures are very good. I sold my EF 14L II in the spring for close to $2K, so I am extremely pleased with the results from this lens for the sub 500 price. The only downside is the hood/lens cap assembly since the plastic is pretty flimsy. I am using the Cokin X-Pro filter system with my wide angle lenses, and I tried the universal adapter on the petal hood (a route that works very well on the sigma 15-30) but the petal heights are too far apart to make it work as is, and the plastic petals flex too much to mount it on just two. I am heading in to the high mountains of British Columbia near the Alberta border this weekend, and it looks to be a very wet and cloudy outing, so I will let you know how it does in the rain. I absolutely soaked my TS-E 24 II and 5D II in a thunderstorm yesterday morning and everything seems fine, hopefully the Bower holds up to the humidity and cold too.

Why are the testpictures in this test of the Samyang 14 mm all saying 50mm ??

Because the lens does not provide EXIF data and the camera choose 50mm by default.

On the Pentax K-5 (and K10D and K-x) it adds the focal length I choose for the shake reduction, but only when it's on, that's a bit annoying <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />
