So they're here - what do you think ?

These new Alphas try to be in between of EVILs and DSLRs. A good idea in terms of legacy support.

Seems to be promising regarding dust prevention as well.

And I will certainly try to get one for my upcoming vacation.

However, this will not prevent the mid-to-long terms collapse of the DSLR market though.

I fact we're already in the middle of it - last month the EVILs reached a market share of 40% in Japan.

I really doubt it - according to the reports, DSLR sales have increased nearly 35% over the last year. Has anyone compared how EVILs are doing against point-and-shoot cameras? Somehow I think EVILs will simply form a separate, third segment, mostly eating away market share currently owned by P&S cameras and some entry-level DSLRs. It's really difficult to believe that EVILs would affect any DSLRs above mid-level (say, D90 and up).

A percentage means nothing unless it is specified to what is related. 35% of what? Unit sales? Profits? Which level, High End, consumer? It's even possible you are both making a true point <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

But I have also to say that Japan market direction proved not to be so significant when it comes to the rest of the world.. think to the colorful cameras, for example, not to talk about the fact they love tiny designs above all.

What about weight? Is there anything wrong with both Sony press releases?

700+ gr for A33/A55 and 900+ gr for A560/A580 sounds too much even if this includes the 18-55 lens.

I used to shoot a lot with EVF cameras (Photosmart 850, 945 and Dimage A2) somewhere between the film and digital SLRs. Frankly I liked it. Controversaly, the cameras I enjoyed more were the HP models. You look in the EVF, play with exposure compensation and get the image you want; that's it. The EVF image wasn't too precise, but the final outcome was pretty predictable. Then, if you don't leave the shutter release after taking the picture (HP850) you can examine the captured image.

With RAW shooting (A2) the whole idea got lost.

A2 with its superior viewfinder and manual zoom was a joy to handle, but there was a catch - after several shots it gets too warm to my liking.

If they implement the EVF to accurately show the to-be-captured image, this could be better than OVF. Moreover, if they supply RAW converter that automatically creates the photo with all camera settings, you can benefit from both worlds. The current Sony converter doesn't take DEC settings (contrast/staturation/etc) into account.

And if together with _all_ the above they provide convenient on-camera interface for DEC (like it was on A2), they win my next camera purchase.

The source of the "almost 40%" figure seems to be this Japanese page:

http://kakaku.com/trendnews/camera/id=weekly_350/

It refers to "PV" as the unit throughout, but I have no idea what it means. Page Views? Product Volume? Product Value?

It does seem to be lumping in EVIL and DSLR together for the calculation, excluding compacts.
<a class="bbc_url" href="http://snowporing.deviantart.com/">dA</a> Canon 7D2, 7D, 5D2, 600D, 450D, 300D IR modified, 1D, EF-S 10-18, 15-85, EF 35/2, 85/1.8, 135/2, 70-300L, 100-400L, MP-E65, Zeiss 2/50, Sigma 150 macro, 120-300/2.8, Samyang 8mm fisheye, Olympus E-P1, Panasonic 20/1.7, Sony HX9V, Fuji X100.

Well, the EVILs aren't any cheaper than consumer DSLRs anyway ...

I think the primary point is that "standard users" simply don't need a DSLR - that is once there's a sufficient amount of accessory (reads: lenses) available for the EVILs (which is not the case yet).

The image quality is pretty much identical to FT/APS-C DSLRs. The only real area where the EVIL cameras are inferior is AF speed. You may find arguments against and in favor of an (decent) EVF vs an OVF.

I would consider myself to be a power user and no, I don't require a DSLR anymore.

I could agree with this statement. But... "standard users" didn't need 24 Mp as well, or AF-S, or exotic lenses, and there they are anyway. Not to talk about ergonomic and UI: so far any EVF camera is simply too small and light to have a good handling.. at least for my big hands <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

My pojnt is: market segments are diversifying for sure, but I see none disappearing in the future.

I am not sure about the concept. Pellicle mirrors have been tried before and never really succeeded. Though it might fly this time.

I like the size I have to say. Which lens to you intend to take? Why do you prefer this one over a more tested mFT offering?

Actually I owned the EOS RT for a while ... and was thrilled!

Regarding my vacation - I reckon my girl-friend will take the NEX + 18-200.

I still have the Zeiss 16-80 in my stock here as well as the 70-300G.

A little confused on these. What's the point of it over a cameras like the Canon t1/2i? The Sony's don't look much smaller or lighter. Now, if I already had a Sony system it might make more sense.

Plus, the pen/lumix makes more sense to me as a vacation and easy to carry system. I had toyed with this option before picking up a T1i. In the end I decided it wasn't worth the cost.
