I am in no mood to shelve out big monies for a tele zoom...

So i'm looking for one 70-300 types which is excellent stopped down. F8/F5.6/F11...whatever. 

It can be for Nikon or for OMD...

Guess its not unreasonable to ask for such a thing...

If it is, then it can be at least as good as a 70-200 F4

Whichever is the best...

For the same reasons I have chosen Tamron 70-300 VC.

from what i have seen, you cannot go wrong with nikon 70-300 VR either.

I'm canon shooter. and I choose Tamron due to

 1. Lower price

 2. Optically equal to canon 70-300 non L

 3. contrasty at 300mm/5,6.

 4. complete package - hood inclued etc.

 5. AF - sort of ring USM motor

 6. brand adicted - I'm hapy owner of tamron 17-50 non VC

 

My experince matches PZ report of this lens. Tamron is good wide open up until 200mm. After that you have to stop-down to F8. DOn't get me wrong - the wide open 300mm still usable. A little bit sharpening in PP is needed. I use 300/5,6 often by my Birth in fly picture. The only think that you have to concert about this lens is the VC - it has only one mode and viewfinedr get steady when VC is engaged.

 

So I'm happy owner of tamron 70-300VC for more than 2 years

Just about all lenses perform very good at f8. So, just pick any lens?

Are we talking Nikon FF here? Or APS-C.

 

 

OMD only needs only 100mm and f4 to be 200mm f8 FF equivalent.

According to PZ

1. Canon 70-300 IS L @300mm FF test F=8

   - center - 3329

   - border - 2848

   - extreme border - 2745

2. Tamron 70-300 VC @300mm FF test F=8

   - center - 3082

   - border - 2626

   - extreme border -2614

 

My experiance - Tamron at 300mm is resonably sharp, but don't expect any wonder here. Finaly you get what you paid for!

As already mentioned at 70-200mm F=8 you can get razor sharp images

I had gone for 180/2.8 instead of buying a zoom...good that i did that way, but i also need a zoom

Will share some of the 180 shots soon...its a very good lens.
