Hello,

I'm in the marked again for standard zoom lens. The old one died-tamron 17-50 non vc. It survived several crashes except the last one.

Here are my options.

1. Canon kit lens – optically good but I don’t like the sealing. I use only high quality lenses and my canon400d is cleaned only 2-3 times.
   
2. Tamron 17-50 non VC – I love it, sharp, good AF, excellent flare resistance, reliable . The bokeh is not good, Missing VC I should call it as advantage
   
3. Sigma 17-50 OS????
   
4. Buy nothing  - 17-50 range is something for my smartphone
   

My other lenses are – Sigma 10-20, Canon 50/1,8 MK1, Tokina 100macro,Sigma 150Macro,Tamron 70-300VC

 

 

 

 

What is your choose and why?

Well, I'd go for another Tamron 17-50 non-VC, for the reasons you mentioned . If you hadn't the Sigma 10-20 I would have also suggested the much more expensive Canon 15-85, but since you do...

The Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 OS HSM is better built than your old 17-50mm Tamron. It is a bit more contrasty, it has less problematic CA at 17mm. It focusses more accurately and silently. It offers IS. From what I have seen, bokeh is pretty pleasing too.

 

I wonder which phone offers a standard zoom?

 I've tried both, my copy of the Sigma (S/H) was poor, while trying just about all the F2.8 short zooms (in Pentax inc. the DA* 16-50) I realized just how good the Tamron is, I still think the Tamron nudges it fully open, but it's a close race!

  If I was starting again I'd try a new Sigma knowing I could return it for another if necessary.

I have given a try of Sigma 17-50.

1. Optically it was similar to my 7year old tamron. I like Sigmas warm colours, slightly beter contrast and significantly beter bokeh, but I like tamron corner sharpness straight from 2,8.
   
2. AF – I have not seen any difference between two in terms of AF accuracy and speed. Anyway both ware worse compare to any canon lens.
   
3. Build quality – Tamron and Sigma have chosen different approach. Tamron can survive longer in “MY” everyday use, but once broken it is not repairable item. Sigma will brake easy but repairment process seems intuitive.
   
4. Price – Sigma I can alny find it new for 400Euro. Tamron new 330Euro. Used 150Euro.
   

 

I have returned sigma and will search for second hand tamron, with only 50euro above kit lens is not brainer.

Watch out for decentered copies, strangely the Sigma I tried wasn't decentered but didn't have any edge sharpness, I tried for half a day to get something out of it to no ends.

Tamron can survive longer in “MY” everyday use, but once broken it is not repairable item.
 

 

 

My Tamron broke after 8 years of use (zoom ring stopped working, something broke inside). Probably caused an incident involving the camera falling on asphalt once, but it took years for it to finally give in. I've sent it for repair to the local Tamron centre and it cost me about 120Euros. I got back a perfectly functional repair, cleaned throughout and looking almost as new. I feel it should last me just as long.

 

So it definitely can be repaired - depending on damage and costs of course, as well as buying a replacement can sometimes be more cost effective.

My tamron has the same syptom - zoom ring , hovever it is still working, I alreade got another used for 150euro.

BTW: my tamron survied at least 3 crashes,across my family use.

I'll keep in mind that tamron can service my new-old tamron.

 

I had similar problem with my sigma 10-20 - I opened by myself - One pin was damaged. I'me made another metal pin and srew it up.

I suppose that Tamron has similar problem. The problem is that tamron dissasembly seems no trivial - at least for me.
