Hello
I am planning to visit New York during fews days in may 2015.
My current gear is :
Canon 5d classic
35 F2 IS
50 F1.8 mk 1
70-300 L IS
100 F2.8 Macro L IS
Planned lens purchase:
85 F1.8
16-35 F4 L
Which lenses would you recommend for New York ?
Best regards,
Emmanuel
After spending some time wandering around European capitals with the 5D or 5DII with the 17-40 f4L and 70-200f4L IS, I concluded it's a mug's game (for me anyway) to travel loaded down with so much (heavy) kit. Now I just travel with the 6D and 24-105 f4L IS and the combo worked just fine tor travelling to OZ (Melbourne and Sydney) via Japan (Tokyo) for a month earlier this year. The 24-105 is a wonderful one-stop travel lens of excellent quality though wrongly maligned in some quarters. It has wonderful colour and contrast and the IS is excellent. That would be my choice for the 5D. Enjoy your travels!

For New York I think it should be the 600mm f/4....... No seriously, What do you want to shoot in New York? Street portraits? Then buy the 85mm 1.8 ( or no lens at all as your 100mm macro will also do fine). Want to shoot cityscapes and skyscrpers in all their glory? Then go for 16-35 (or at least the 24-104) to have some wideangle. If you specialise in extremely condensed skyscrapers like to shoot birds in central park even the 600mm f/4 or could be the right lens for you......
I think Harry's "24-105mm" is a pretty good answer. Been in NYC twice and I found this city to be EXHAUSTING... So much thing to see & do you end up walking so much every day... so sticking to a light kit is actually a very very good tip, if you ask me. Add a really wide angle to it. But remember you can always shoot with moderate wide angle shots and stitch later to widen your fov, if you're careful & a bit luck too (crowded highly variable content pictures might be hard to stitch).
My last time in NY is a while ago.
But the 17-85 + 10-22 on a Crop 1.6 camera was a good choice for me then.
Today, on a 5D I would also recommend the 24-105 plus a UWW.

I don't think it makes any difference whether it's New York or New Deli.
If you are traveling with your family, then just take a point and shoot. My last trip to Austgralia I took a D300+16-35mm f4. I regretted it from day 1. Last year we went to Thailand and Cambodia. I left my D800 (upgraded from the D300) at home and took a V1 plus two small lenses. Couldn't have been happier.
If you are on your own then whatever you can carry.
