Dave, get the 85/1.8G it looks awesome. And is pretty modern to boot. Also gets rid of purple fringing.

By the way Klaus, if the 24/1.4A "isn't hot", then the 24L would be positively subzero. The only real problem with the A, I think, was that it didn't completely vaporize the L like the 35 and 50 Sigmas did to their counterparts.

The Nikkor AF-S 85mm f1.8G still has very strong LoCA, stronger even than the Canon EF 85mm f1.8 USM and Sigma 85mm f1.4 HSM, I believe.

The only fast 24 mm lens "hotter" than the Sigma is a Zeiss 25/2. Resolution about the same, but better contrast and much better flare resistance. I'd loose a stop of speedy f/1.4 and I'd gain a stop of huge Dof f/22 (which comes at the price of lower res.). So for calm landscapes and using LiveView or Sony's a7RII focus system, the Zeiss is boss. It should be, at 100% more costs, minus AF, minus f/1.4. In the Milvus line there's a gap between 21 and 35 mm.

      I checked out the dimensions of the G vs the D, the G is quite a bit larger but lighter, I also prefer the constructional feel of the AF-Ds.  Sharpness wise they are similar, bokeh's a better on the G, but it's only slight. While I was weighing it all up a AF-D popped up on "the bon coin" site and I went for it at 250 euros in great nick, a tad more than I wanted to spend, but heck, still 150 less than the G!

  (BTW has to be AF otherwise it would have been a no brainer for Samyang)

   

 I think for hand to hand combat (maybe up one of Brightcolour's mountains) the D will inflict the most physical damage on any assailant with a better chance of it being functional after the mortal contact! ...   :wub:

  It always goes like this when hunting around for gear, as soon as I purchased the "D"  an "S" turns up at the same price.

 The good side of this sort of lens buying though is if you don't like what you have just bought you can sell it on without losing money.

 

  With all these new FF Nikons bodies these older FF lenses are going up in value!

Well, good if you can; I was never good at that - I either fail to get rid of gear or have to sell it at massive discount to get a deal at all. I would make a terrible salesman.

Though I have to admit, I've had that "cheap'n'nasty" habit myself - for years I was cherishing a Canon 24-85/3.5-4.5 lens, and now, after having given it away to a friend (who upgraded to a 5D Mark III but was missing any full-frame lenses shorter than 80mm *snicker*), I'm thinking of getting another one someday. But this time a silver variant.
