I'm liking the new Irix kid in lens town.

Keith Cooper tried the 15mm on his 5Ds and he says:
  • "Very solid feeling lenses and very low distortion.
  • I'll not publish the photos, since they were not production lenses, but suffice to say, I'm looking forward to trying them out for real later this year."

Interesting that they start up with ulta-wide-angles. Hope, they manage to get a good reputation.

Quote:There would be nothing wrong with Samyang going more premium - assuming that these speculations have substance.

I could also well believe that the finish was actually designed in Switzerland.

Just a start up out of nowhere feels a little unlikely but you never know. Things are easier these days.

IF these price tags are true I am having a few doubts about the quality of the QC though. South-Korea is hardly a cheap place. The current Samyangs are cheaper but they are also simpler.

Another interesting thing - the Samyang 14mm f/2.8 is having a sell-out at the foto-tip ...

Ahh, rumors are so much fun ... ;-)

actually, another rumor pointed out at dpreview, the foto-tip owner had a falling out with Samyang, and is not distributor anymore.  I notice all Samyang lenses are listed as clearance sale at foto-tip.

And someone also pointed out there is another manufacturer that might look for work: Samsung...

Still, I'm more inclined to think about Samyang, they let many others put their stickers on.

Somehow it feels like a couple of enthusiasts (Polish?) wanted some improved lenses (compared to Samyang), so

they approached a company with a spec list.    Didn't even Samyang say they want to go higher class. They recently came out

with the XEEN line. The XEEN web site is looking more IRIX like than their classic Samyang web site

Didn't Samyang also start their consumer lineup with the 14/2.8? I remember it being released to much anticipation... and a delay resulting from the redesigning of the lens following a scathing review of the initial model by Lenstip.com. Smile

I think they started with the 85mm f/1.4

Indeed, the 1st lens that was not a 500/800mm mirror lens that they marketed as their own lens was the 85mm f1.4 asph.

Yes, but they also (and still - hidden under the T mount section) made various cheap non-mirror tele's 500mm f8, 650-1300mm zoom...

I think they started to get recognition with the 2. lens, the 8mm APS-C fish-eye.  Lots of word of mouth on many forums, in particular Germany. I bought this lens from foto-tip - maybe even before the photozone review, though the polish review may already have been out (the original of lenstip). Finally an affordable, good quality fish eye for crop, no compromise like the 8mm Peleng (cropping necessary).

EU prices for the Irix 15mm f2.4:  â‚¬695 for the Blackstone version, €475 for the Firefly version. Not bad, at all.

"The Irix project is the result of cooperation of specialists, photographers, engineers and photography enthusiasts. Answering some rumours, we are proud to announce that Irix is a completely new project, not related to any of the existing companies in Korea, Japan or other Asian country as presumed before by some comments.

<p style="font-size:15px;background-color:transparent;color:rgb(102,102,102);font-family:Georgia, serif;font-style:italic;">The European part of the project, gathering specialists from different European countries, is managed by
TH Swiss AG, SPV established and based in Switzerland."
