Distortion galore:

Other first impressions: build quality is ok, AF is a bit on the slow side.

That looks like quite a bit of barrel distortion at 28mm in image 6

and quite a bit of pincushion distortion at 180mm in image 9

The first doesn't come unexpected, but the latter is a bit strange (at least in this strength).

How does it compare to the Tamron 28-300 VC in this regard?

Hi Markus,

other tests claim that distortion was sacrificed for sharpness. Can you confirm? Can you measure how much resolution is lost on the borders when correcting for distortion? It would be very intersting to know whether it makes sense to optimize a lens exclusivly for shapness and disregard distortion. If little resolution is lost on software correction it would be a great compromise

Thanks.

Honestly, I have no idea, since I have hardly any experience with the Tamron.

Not yet. Got the lens just yesterday and used the few rays of sunlight for an early impression. Haven't done any resolution measurement, yet.

I think at 180mm so much pincussion is only acceptable for kit-lens. My 18-105 mm also had such kind of complex distortion.

By the way, the top side of image 14 seems to be soft and I don't think it is OOF, right?

I cannot say yet if the lens is really well centered, but in this shot, the subject simply is OOF at the top. This is 300 mm close to MFD. Even at f/8, DOF is very limited here.
