Hello lovers of photography. My name is manny and I'am new here and I have a question for you all. I'am in the market for a 70-300mm lens . I had my mind made up on the Nikon 70-300mm VR for my Nikon D90.But ever since the Tamron 70-300mm VC lens came out now I have my doubts if the Nikon was or still is the best in IQ out there.Can anybody here give me some input on which should I buy ?

Welcome! I guess this is your first lens in this range and you want to give it a try? If you're concerned about IQ, there are better and more serious lenses out there. So, asking which 70-300 is better is like comparing which brand of instant noodles is better <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> So if I were you, I'd get the cheapest one to get a feel of it and then save my money so I can put it towards something better in a more specific focal length that I might like in that zoom range.



My recommendation is to go for the Nikon because it's a safe option (but I haven't checked any prices). I'd also consider buying a used lens because I won't feel bad when getting rid of it for a better one some day.

well i don't have personal knowledge about those two lenses but while you're at it, and if you can do so, at least have a look at the sigma 100-300f4 - for me it's a lovely lens, sharp throughout the range and nice soft out of focus bits (if not pin lights that some say are iffy)

Hello manny, I just bought the Tamron 70-300 VC for my D300s and I am very happy with it. It has excellent sharpness and piqué throughout the focal range, which the Nikon does not and pricewise you get very good deals on Dutch internet shops. I agree with genotypewriter that the Sigma 100-300 f4 is an excellent lense, but it really is for a different use, heavier and bigger and more than twice the price. But your choice! Hallo Manny! My vote goes to Nikon 70-300vr. Only reason is compatibility problem could occur. I have only experienced with mentioned 70-300VR and not exactly comparable 70-200VR (first edition). The last one (I use it for last couple of years) is definitely sharper and has more contrast. It is also mach more expensive and heavier, unfortunately. I also have 1.4 teleconverter but I use it rarely.

Go for the Tamron 70-300mm VC USD, it is quite a bit better optically, especially in the long end (and optics... that is what counts). And its image stabilization is more efficient too, report people who have used both.

Not everybody uses lenses the same way as you do. Not everybody is willing to lug around a heavy f/2.8 pro zoom for stopped down landscape shooting. Not everybody is made of money - but they still have a right to get the best lens for the money (for them, it probably matters more than for those made of money). IMO, the 70-300 VR & Co. are excellent for the prize, size, and weight. No, they're not up there with a fast prime, but sometimes, they're the right tool for the job...



Being a snob doesn't make you a better photographer, and it doesn't make you more helpful either...

I vote for nikon.



Better construction and you dont have that problem about buying a "bad copy".



Tamron perform better at 300mm. But nikon is very sharp until 200mm. Its hard to beat.



Like i said in another topic, I am giving a very good use to this lens to portrait shots at wide open or in 100~150mm...



VR is very effective.
