The fading haze was already present on the original image. However, I reduced the highlights in the sky (was over-exposed) and applied some clarity thus making it quite a bit more visible than on the original image.

So the halos along the edges are just "real", not from tonal mapping or so.

I'm not sure we're actually talking about the same thing. I don't use any HDR software or didn't apply any tonemapping. Here is the original shot unprocessed so you can judge for yourself:

I also like #2 best, i think because of the darker foreground
