Yakim - India is to hot between spring - summer anyway and after that there is the monsum - October should be good- you will get the best weather then ;-)

Try to go to Darjeeling in the Himalaya, very exotic, the have wild monkeys, different to the rest of India and brilliant for photos.

Darjeeling and Shimla were certainly in my planned route. Everything I saw and read about them suggest that they are a "must see" cities.

I intend to go with two bags. One is the aforementioned above. Any suggestions for another bag or, more precisely, another type of bag? I intend to carry in it all my daily things like shirts, towel, trousers etc.

I want to emphasize that I do not plan any long (i.e. more than one day) treks. That means that this bag will basically be used only to transport these things from train/bus station to the guest house and vice versa.

I do have a Lowepro rover. It'll be great but if it gets stolen I'll be rather upset.

TIA.

Oktober is still good to travel in India. In Darjeeling you really must go trekking. There are some fabulous routes up there and even short three day trek are more than enough to see the grandeur of the mountains. Most hotels let your leave the heap of your laguage there, so you can got lightweight.

As to the bags. I used lowepro lens cases and a toploader for the camera. This could all be stuffed into a regular daypack for travelling. I also carried a lowepro light belt, to which I attached the lens cases when shooting. This way I could convieniently carry all the gear on my back when not using it, while having a comfortable and accessible waistpack while shooting. Another advantge was, that I could fit lots of other things into the backpack, even when I transported the photo gear in it (such as toiletries, a book, etc).Specialised Photo backpacks let you carry no more than a light jacket in addition to your gear. They force you to carry another back for all the items you need on the plane/train/bus. Furthermore, when I was out shooting I had the daypack to carry maps, water bootles(very important in India) sunscreen etc.

Thanks for the tip. I'll take a close look at the toploaders. Now I have a lot of time to check things out. <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' />
