Gotta give these guys credit... a lens-specific/specialised extender is not such a bad idea, come to think of it!
Glad to see Canon making new and interesting lenses instead of just upgrading the VR and jacking up the price by a grand... oops I meant image stabilisation <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />

This looks promising. And from the pictures, they placed the zoom ring where it belongs ... unlike Nikon.
Talking about Nikon <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' /> The list prices of the VR lenses were only marginally increased, if at all. Street prices slowly come down where they used to be.

The price tag for this one will be insane ...
Considering that after the price hike Canon lenses are still more expensive, I wouldn't be surprised if that new lens is priced around 7,000 EUR <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />

I'd say that this would fit.
I think it's pretty safe to assume that the optics will be flawless. No need to test it!
My dream wildlife lens to pick up where the 100-400L runs out of steam. This is almost certainly a purchase for me, unless dealbreakers surface once it becomes real.
Am I too optimistic? I'd guess a post-launch street price comparable to the 300mm f/2.8 II after the initial rush clears.

Have you considered the 300-800 f/5.6 used?

Don't think I've ever seen one available, and even if I did and could afford it, I'm not sure I would want to hand hold it! I'd estimate equivalent to a 300/2.8 (600/5.6) would be about my limit here, so the 400/4 would fit in.

I'm sure many people thought the same way when the 200-400 VR was released. <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />
