Something makes me think that the successor to the D700 is right around the corner. I have asked several resellers over the last 6 months and, until now, they have always answered clearly that they know nothing, but that it is not soon. This time nobody answers, which makes me think that something is about to be launched. Has anyone else heard, or not heard, something? Kindly VL

What would be hilarious is if they put the D3s version of the sensor in the D700 replacement <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' /> I expect to see a lot of blood shed and open fires rising from the Nikon camp in to the night

Which would make no sense whatsoever from the marketing point of view. At the moment the only gap in the Nikon line-up is an affordable high-res FF (something like 5D II), and I guess Nikon is going to plug it pretty quickly.

And if it comes with D3X's 24mp sensor, I'll probably buy it right away.

Actually what would be real funny is if Nikon announces D4 and Canon users are still stuck with 4 years old 1Ds III <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol:' />

I guess you mean D4x? The 1Ds is a great camera (as is the 3Dx, obviously). One can be happy with being "stuck" for such a studio camera for a while.

It is widely known that Canon stopped the development and introduction for the 1Ds mk IV because they felt the improvements and step up from the 1Ds mk III might not be big enough considering any pending competitors release. This means development is going on as we speak, and a follow-up camera will be more than just an iteration.

It is fine if Nikon announces a D4, Canon will roll out new cameras when they are well and ready, just like Nikon will do. I imagine the D3x follow up, 5D mk III and 1Ds mk III follow up to all be as impressive as the current models were at introduction. And I sincerely hope that Sony will bring a fully featured FF DSLR too, and not in the guise of a problem prone SLT design.

Just like cannibalising D3 sales with the D700 or the D300 sales with the D90 or now the D90 sales with the D7000 <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />

Ah I think they'll manage... for example, most of the Nikon pro and amateur users alike are stuck with ~12MP FF technology from 2003 and they seem to be happy... that's like 8 years now right? <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

Well, the thing is Nikon pricing for the coming "D800" might be about 25-30% up from the D700 price (considering recent product releases) and at such price point it wouldn't quite be affordable, I'm afraid <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Of course - like canibalising 7D sales with 60D, etc. Unfortunatelly Canon is no better here <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />

Sure, if we start measuring the technology by mp count alone, then 16mp 1D IV was already outdated at the day of the release (because of 18mp 7D) <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol:' />

Yeah I know that, it was just a silly retort to genotypewriter's "blood shed and open fires rising from the Nikon camp", sorry <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' />

There are many rumours, some of them are very silly, and some makes you think. But I'm sure of one thing, Nikon should settle it's model naming conventions... It's quite hard to make future assumptions based on existing model line-up...<img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' /> Though, I will speculate based on the naming conventions:

D3 --> D4, D5, D6..... (a clear path, there won't be many models in this line-up)

D700 --> D800, D900 (then what, D901?.. or go on like D710, D720... depends on the FX body strategy for the following 10 years)

D100, D200, D300 --> D400, D500.... (catch the D700 and win the prize OR),

D100, D200, D300 --> D310, D320.... (better ha!)

D80, D90 --> R.I.P.

D7000 --> D7100, D7200... (a clear path)

D3000, D3100 --> D3200, D3300... (a clear path)

D5000 --> D5100, D5200... (a clear path, but personally, the most killable model)

My hopefull guess is that they won't kill the D700 (as it is the most affordable FX in the Nikon line-up). But there will be no D3 successor in the future which is similar to D700 in terms of sensor technology. A new D700x (or D800 or D710); still with on-board flash, 100% viewfinder, better focusing screen for MF purposes, double CF slot, improved auto WB, improved AF in low light, better low light performance with decent DR & tonal range & resolution, increased pixel density (please not up to 24mp, this much pixel density must be the area of D3, D4 line-up)... Wouldn't that be great? I think Nikon must have an affordable FX in the line-up by the end of 2011. Depending on the rumours related to 5D MK-III, this is their last chance for still being in the race to sell FX bodies to amateurs. But if they put a >24mp FF sensor in the D700 successor, I don't think that it would be affordable compared to Canon (unless Nikon plans a revolutionary price strategy).
