The original was very good - doesn't look like there is a compelling reason to update like there was with the 28-75. And the one issue that could see some improvement is actually the least likely one to be addressed in any update. Smile (the huge amount of pincushion distortion at 180mm)

Interesting. I like the concept of original, curious to see the improvements on v2. Supposed text release says lens is to have optical stabilization (VR), so one tickbox checked.

Oh... I kind of overlooked the addition of IS, but then again, it would technically be the "70-180 VC", not the "70-180 G2" in this case? (much like in the rest of similar cases)

Indeed the release text (added later to the linked article) is very interesting, it's going to be a very good lens. Lighter than SEL70200G and just a tad heavier than SEL70200G2, but it's ƒ/2.8.
