Forums > Back > Tamron to release a 17-50mm ƒ/4 lens
#1
It should happen tomorrow, August 24, according to SonyAlphaRumors.
Well, had they done this a month ago I would have had one more option to replace my SEL1670Z. Really curious.

Announced, but I don't see specs yet (now I'm in a hurry, I'm leaving for a hike). It seems interesting, but it's larger than the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8.

Looks quite "long" (as usual) despite them stating that it's compact.

I suppose this will kill their own 20-40mm f/2.8

Of course it's larger than the Sigma, because it's for full frame.
I can imagine wanting this lens in Z mount if I eventually decide to go all in and get rid of my EF gear. Which is unlikely but I can think, can't I?

It was reported sometimes as 17-40/4, which made me chuckle. I've used Canon lens with these specs a few times, even on the Z9 once, but last I remember, it wasn't a a good performer on FF as per the Photozone tests. Let's hope this new Tamron is better.

P.S. I think that as is usual with mirrorless lenses, this Tamron will have huge barrel distortion at the wide end, so using an E-mount version via adapter on Z mount will not be practical...
P.P.S. Klaus, I don't think it will kill the 20-40 any more than the 24-105/4 lenses have "killed" the 24-70 class. Some people will still want that f/2.8 aperture and the extended upper range.
P.P.P.S. Shouldn't this thread be in the Sony board?

Very nice range, although for me the killer lens would be a 18-80mm f4 ;-)
So far, the closest is the Sony 20-70 f4.

“Of course it's larger than the Sigma, because it's for full frame.”

But it's also a stop slower.

So, no specs yet?

I think the most interesting aspect of this lens is internal zooming.

Yes. But I also want to see figures about uncorrected vignetting and distortion...

I think these will not be pretty. But we can hope for the best.
