I would like to thank you all for your helpful replies.
I am still mostly undecided, but leaning slightly towards Canon.
Yesterday Sony caught my attention (again). I tried the A900 with both the Zeiss 24-70/2.8 and the Sony 35/1.4G.
The A900 is a very nice camera, probably what most people would call a "photographic tool". The viewfinder seems to be another step up from the 5D or D700. The JPEGs straight of the camera have a special look that reminds me of film days, but I guess this can be achieved by post-processing with any other camera. In the mixed lighting in front of that Sony store, I found the metering to be much better than what my Nikon would give in a similar situation.
The Zeiss 24-70 feels like milled from one block of glass, but I liked it very much. Longer reach with slower aperture would be better, though.
The Sony 35/1.4G is quite a bit more compact than its Canon and Nikon counterparts, but looks a bit outdated without SSM. Reviews seem to indicate that this lens is overpriced for what you get, but sample pictures taken with it do not look bad at all. Even some of the samples in the Photozone review look good.
Sadly, Sony does not seem to have an up-to-date macro lens. Please help me find more reasons to get this Sony thing out of my head. <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
