Not sure if anyone's seen this:

http://nikonrumors.com/2011/03/14/nikons-official-statement-on-the-disaster-in-japan.aspx

or this:

http://nikonrumors.com/2011/03/15/nikon-prices-going-up.aspx

It's a shame that online retailers are pocketing the extra money here. Wish they donated the extras to Japan instead. While it will not be enough to bring things back to the original state (if that's possible at all), without the production resuming in Japan, what are these sellers going to sell when the stocks run out?

I guess individuals could do it too... but who's going to auction their used D700 and 70-200 VR II and donate the extras to a Japanese earthquake charity?!

Congratulations, GTW, you're the first to receive a warning in this forum.

We all know your position regarding Nikon, but this was clearly over the top. The way you link your subtle brand bashing to the unfolding disaster in Japan (and its unavoidable economic consequences) is both inappropriate and insulting.

I have suspended your membership for 14 days. Given that your account shows the lowest reputation score of all members here, you may want to use that period to reconsider your tone and attitude if you want to continue to be part of this community afterwards.

Hello Markus,

If you choose to accuse me in the public areas of the forum I guess it's not unfair to ask you the reasons for it.

Care to explain how blaming retailers for jacking up the prices is the same as "brand bashing"?

Also why did you ban me right after I asked the following question about your lens testing methodology and why did you avoid answering a perfectly valid question?

The reasons are explained in the post you quoted. If you don't get it, I don't see how I could explain it in a different way.

You don't think your post was a little Nikon-centric?

Prices are increasing everywhere. It's of course easy to blame the retailer, but increasing prices are simply the result of the way economy works. Supply is drowning, deman is not.

That question had nothing to do with your ban.

Come on, be honest, D700 is too good to have a successor.

Your reasoning was "we all know your position regarding Nikon"... so you effectively banned me because I have preferences that had nothing to do with post you banned me for?

I suppose I should have talked about Canon, Pentax, Olympus or Sony in a thread titled "D700 successor"...

So you finally admit that I was referring to the retailers and not Nikon? Then why did you ban me?

Congrats, Markus... that's 3 oopsies for you in one post. If I were you I'd watch what I say for the sake of Photozone's credibility.

Funny how a perfectly valid question that people should know the answer to went without getting an answer from you guys until I asked about it in relation to the ban.

PS: As for me, I know it's time to move on when what I gain is far less than what I contribute. Good luck to your "center", "border", "extreme border" futures ;D

Isn't it surprising that all flame wars stopped without your "contributions"? In this case it's difficult to find any words other than - good riddance. Bye.

With respect to prices, I have been checking all the retailers that I use and have not found any increases over the last month for any of the things I buy? i.e., lenses, bodies, memory cards, etc. I don't know about the high street retailers, but I don't use them. If there was a trend, I think the large internet retailers would show it and I have seen no increase there.

As far as GTW, I find it a pity when politics and issues far beyond photography (which I believe to be the only issue for this forum) is injected in a way that is far from open and clear. I am not against discussions of the kind he tries to start, but in a forum that deals with societal issues.

Having started this thread, I find that it has far outplayed its role and lost focus of the initial issue and suggest we close it.

I have. In fact I lost several orders due to the massively increased prices (Nikon 70-200 VR II and 24-70/2.8, for example). And prices have not only increased for Nikon gear, but across all brands.

If you compare prices on www.idealo.de there are some diferences:

idealo.de 9.1.2011 8.4.2011

d700 1.836 € 1.958 € 6,64%

nikkor 70-200VR 1.959 € 1.999 € 2,04%

nikkor 24-70/2.8 1.405 € 1.448 € 3,06%

sigma 12-24 698 € 730 € 4,58%

MB-D10 200 € 229 € 14,50%

kenko 300 1.4 195 € 199 € 2,05%

sigma 120-400 659 € 709 € 7,59%

tamron 90mm Di 370 € 380 € 2,70%

together
7.322 € 7.652 € 4,51%

I'm surprised that the difference is so small. Probably I didn’t use appropriate samples, or it is only EUR inflation, or easter fever.

On other hand, new D700 was newer so inexpensive like few days ago (ebay 1485 GBP).

Nice day

The price comparison sites are not a good indicator. They usually base price trends on the lowest price listed, regardless of if its in stock or not.

So, you can still find many price listings for rather low prices, it's just that no one has stock for these low prices (and prices are maybe increased only after new stock arrives).

To give you an indication: just a few weeks ago the 70-200 VR II was available for 1829,- EUR at cameratools.nl (and some other Dutch dealers). They are now at 1949,- EUR (and some others even higher). Which is still less than the cheapest reseller in Germany that actually has stock.

Same thing for the AF-S 24-70, was 1389 EUR, now is 1549 at cameratools.

Just two examples of many more.
