Following up [url="http://forum.photozone.de/index.php?/topic/790-camera-serviced-and-returned-tamron-usd-failed/"]this post[/url] I got a new replacement from Tamron today



Took a few quick pics when I got home from work... Dull light, been raining here today and it was getting late...



These 3 [url="http://iancds.smugmug.com/Tests/Replaced-Tamron-Tests/16602018_Kz6me#1251011624_btL3W"](here)[/url] are the best of a few at 300mm... I found it difficult to get the focus spot on and had to stop down (f11 wasn't as sharp).



These were taken with tripod and infra-red remote (mirror up first, then release shutter).



I'm still wondering: is this as sharp as I should expect from this lens at 300mm?



I'll do the decentering 'sanity' checks over weekend when I've got more time.

DOF is rather thin at 300mm, especially with subjects very close.



The sharpness isn't impressive, but honestly that's not really surprising at f/22, where diffraction eats away lots of resolution already.



If possible, try to shoot something similar again with f/11 or less.

Hi Markus,

I did several of these shots at f11, f16 and f22... On several of them the focus was clearly out... all the f11 shots were worse than these three. Two of these are at f16.



One of the things I find difficult to understand is that I took each shot twice, using the remote. In most cases the focus was off in the first, the second sharper. Does the camera re-focus using the remote (I didn't think it did). Could something else cause camera shake in these circumstances - not much wind but they were long-ish exposures?



I did these after trying hand-held at f5.6 with VC, which weren't good at all.



So, do you mean the sharpness is less than you'd expect from this lens with the D7000, (+ mounted on a tripod, using remote and mirror-up).



I know this isn't good testing... just wondered if these pics gave any indication



I'll take more shots at the weekend with better light, faster shutter speeds, etc.

I had a Tamron 70-300 VC USD for a couple of days together with a D90. Sharpness of this lens was mostly poor, only say 1 out 10 shots was OKish. VC and USD appeared to be working though. However, I found in the Exif data that using the Tamron yielded substantially different subject distances compared to those I got when using another lens in the same setting. In other words, something was very wrong...

My two tamron lenses work flawless. Funny enough they ware first sample that I’ve got from shop.

1.tamron 17-50 non VC – despite sporadic forum reports for missfocussing problems, my lens focus perfectly on canon 400d and 50d.

2.Tamron 70-300 VC – focus is fast and spot on. VC is ok. Combo 50d+T70-300vc is very capable setup for wildlife photography. I have a situation when the whole lens, lens hood and part of camera ware in ice while AF was still working ok.

3.A friend of mine bought Tamron 60/2 macro. I’ve tested and used this lens for a while. No under or overexposure at my canon 400d,50d and my friend 550d.

The exposure issues are Nikon only, seems to have to do with the way the aperture is set on the lenses. You are not the only one having no trouble with the 70-300 USD VC.

I finally got some shots that show (me) the sharpness this lens is capable of.

The dandelion may be showing the very narrow depth of field at 300mm
