Well, the big question is: will there be a SL II? And if so, what will it cost?

Personally, I see no reason for Cosina not to re-release the lens, I'm sure it would sell extremely well (in its narrow market). And probably adjust (read: ruin) the resell value of the older model.

Well if we ignore the money issue is there any advantage of an SL II? Are they better built or have tweaked optics ?

In some sense the current 'value' of the lens has become a bit of a negative here along with the fact that it is out of print and while I would think likely to reappear it is not a given.

They don't need to have a better build or improved optics. Cosina's not making money from the demand for this lens. So in fact, it would've been more sensible for them to have redone the 125 instead of the 90. Hopefully enough of the 90s will sell for them to convince them to re-release the 125.

Sounds a lot like what happened recently to Nikon's 28 1.4 when the 24 1.4G was released. It'll be bad for the owners of the discontinued lens but it'll definitely help Cosina's interests.

Well I think Marcus has seen a few of the SL2 and SL1 lenses so hopefully he can comment on the mechanical changes. I don't think the optics will change.

My primary issue is that I'm not using the lens; actually i think I can manually focus it on the xsi so that might be an option. It is a bit long for crop format (for non-macro usage). Hum. I might still order a 5d2 tomorrow want to sleep on it another night. I'm a little unhappy with the 15-85 rendering - here is a sample:

Hum. I don't know how to attach images; or maybe images are restricted to 500k ?

Call me a mad-purist/mad but most FF lenses (especially primes) are wasted if used exclusively on an APS-C sensor.

I can't believe you just compared one of the cleanest primes out there to a kit zoom! <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />

For most times, copying and pasting the image address/URL would be fine... in this case we get the point without seeing the pics <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' /> Unless, of course, it's a user error... then in that case seeing the pic would be good.

To my knowledge no tweaked optics, so far, at least regarding glass elements. The Nokton and Ultron got new apertures with rounded blades, potentially offering slightly smoother bokeh (on paper at least).

However, "bad bokeh" is not really an issue of the 125 SL, is it? <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />

To me, there is no real difference in build quality, but there is one in build in general. Personally, I prefer the all black SL II lenses.

And of some importance to Nikon users: SL II lenses feature an integrated CPU (unlike SL lenses).

Thanks Markus. genotypewriter some zooms have ok bokeh and the 15-85 is not a cheap kit lens. Having said that while I think the 15-85 is ok (80% lens; no clue how it compares to the 24-105 which I think is said to have good bokeh) it clearly will not win a price for background rendering <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />

Changing topics completely; is the 90mm sl2 worth buying relative to the 70-200f4 is ? I.e, other than size does it have a significant benefits in rendering ?

I saw exactly that model on an online ad posterboard for 700 euros last night. Boxed, with batteries, the lot. <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />

I figured it must be stolen though, and I don't really need another camera. <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />
