That one goes back to the review of 500mm lenses in the Geman Color Foto around 1980. The review was written by Walter E Schön. He compared essentially all 500/8 mirror lenses than available and had a few non mirror lenses to give perspective. The Beroflex was 200DM back then (about 100€) and it performed very well, beating most (all?) of the mirrors. The reviewer coined the name "Wundertüte" in that context.



The winner was the the Zeiss Mirotar 500/4.5 which beat that pants out of every thing. He named that the "unvergleichliche Zeissmonster".



The test was done, when there was no widespread use of Flourite, ED glass, etc. and chromatic aberration was a real issue in long glass. Back then Mirror lenses are easier to correct.

I thought "Nifty fifty" was used for pretty much any 50mm regular prime generically? Maybe leaning to lower cost versions but not specific to the Canon f/1.8.



Beyond the bigma, I've heard the 200-500 f/2.8 called the super bigma.





Personal names I've used include:



Piece of **** - Centon 500mm mirror.

Stuper-zoom - Tamron 18-270.

Stuper-tele - Canon 300mm f/2.8 non-IS with 2x extender on it. More generically may be applied to other long lenses with aperture greater than 100mm.

Pan-pan - "Panasonic Pancake" 20mm f/1.7.

Phoenix's Pupil(Voigtlander 58mm/1.4). No sure where is this name coming from but it sounds cool...



Another cool one: Eye in the Darkness(Nikkor Noct 58/1.2). This one is kind of obvious.



And a really plain one: the Cup(Pentax FA 85/1.4). The lens looks exactly like a cup with the hood on.

You might run into copyright issues with this one - there are helluva lot of other lenses battling for this particular title.

"Google" produces a LOT of made up ones... hard to find real ones.
