Looks like it is going to be hard to beat the N14-24 <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> If I could get a good copy of the Samyang 14, it would be worth it to try it for the price and the Nikon issue has electronic data transmission. Otherwise, the Zeiss 18 is almost the same price and then the zoom becomes a natural choice.

You are of course free to make up your own mind... However, regarding what you said in another thread, about leaving your heavy lenses at home and only taking 2 light primes with you on trips (one of which the Nikon 35mm f2) I can not help but think that this 1 KG (!!) lens is not the right choice, especially since one does want to bring wide angle along on trips/hikes!

"When my D700 feels heavy from time to time, for instance when travelling, I just stick a 35 f2 or 50 f1.4 on and it all of a sudden feels so light that all is forgotten."

In that light I still would consider the lighter, smaller options, which will give fine enough results for you anyway, when stopped down. Which is usually not a problem to do with wide angle.

There then is the Zeiss 18mm which weighs just less than half (470 grams), the very light (just above 200 grams) voigtlander 20mm f3.5 SL II, the ridiculously cheap but good when stopped down Tokina 19-35mm f3.5-4.5 (under 200 euros, 390 grams) or the Tamron 17-35mm f2.8-4 wqhich weighs under half at 440 grams and delivers great results stopped down a bit.

The best lens is the lens you actually bring along....

I will order and test the Samyang 14mm. A pro friend has tried it and found the optical qualities outstanding, so I'll try it out. I'll let you know what I think.!!! Thank you all for your help!

I have a Tammy 17-35mm f2.8-4 for sale - anybody interested? It´s actually the sample tested and reviewed by PZ:

Well, I have news for you <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> I tried the Samyang 14mm f2.8 and could not get used to it; too hard to fit to my camera mechanically <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' /> I really had to use force to hear the click and I don't like that. To me that is already a non starter. After that I found the general quality insufficient; poor lens cap, etc.

Long and the short of it, I sent it back. So I'm back to another choice;
  • another prime, Zeiss 18 or 21
  • the 16-36 f4 or the N 12-24, but I find the latter too expensive for my use
  • the new Sigma 12-24? Has anyone seen or heard any news, test or otherwise?
I had a Sigma 10-20 f3.5 DX which gave me no problems and would not be fundamentally opposed to another Sigma and my 24-70 f2.8 is super. I tend to think that a 12-24 is better than a 16-35, because of the shorter focal range and the Nikkor seems to have lots of distortion on the short end.

What say you all? <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> Give me your best input pls!

The new Sigma 12-24 is still not available.

However the design seems promising. The new glass FLD/XLD makes wonder.

- look at latest review of Sigma 17-50/2,8OS. Sigma 8-16 and sigma 120-300/2,8

- tamron 70-300VC makes another breakthrough.

Since Sigma and Tamron uses Hoya glass I assume that Tamron marketing name XLD is the same as Sigma FLD – originally produced by Hoya

My advice is to wait if it can. However the sample variation at that focal length would be problem.

If you need it now. get Nikkor14-24

With Kind Regards,

Miro

I am not in a hurry! I am very well equipped from 24mm on, so the world is not going to stop turning. I can do 90% of the shooting I do the way I am now <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> So Sammy, keep your Tammy!

In that case you might want to wait for some upcoming FX reviews. There are 3 UWA zooms on my list, currently: Nikkor AF-S 17-35, AF-D 18-35 and Tammy 17-35.

Already sold, my Nikon days are over, MILC and compacts have taken over. No more opportunity to buy this "tested and approved by Klaus" lens.

Great! I will try to wait, but there is a 16-35 sort of winking at me! What do you think Markus?
