Thanks for the review. Now I have to fight to not buy one on ebay at outrageous price.
I heard very good comments about the combo with the x1.4 extender. Did you try it?

Cool stuff. Now all there's need to do is to paint the A850 in white. <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

You can find some white Minolta SLRs on ebay <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

BTW, if Sony made a replacement of this lens. It would be silver and orange like the 70-400G.

Very thanks for this review... I've this lens and now I can compare with other sony lens
i am thinking abut adding this lens to my small as of yet kit.
how does it fair on a a580 (likly my next dslr)
i have a 16-80 zeiss that i love and i plan on getting the tamron or G 70-300
im thinking that the fast 200 will be ok with the APO 2x giving me 400mm f5.6 (best used at f8) will also be used to cover the kids games at 200mm
how would it be for things like butterfly and the like as i have a 30 macro for close and slow objects
thanks

I would not recommend to use a 2x converter unless you're fine with a substantially lower quality. The 1.4x will be no problem but with the 2x you will be basically back to zoom lens levels anyway. If 400m are a priority for you I would either suggest the Sony 70-400G or, even better, the Minolta 400/4.5G.
