Sigma 85mm f/1.4 ART on Sony ...
#11
It remains to be seen how good the Samyang E 85/1.4 is. The EF version, as we all remember, was not a patch on the Sigma or the Tamron 1.8.

Interesting: Sigma just updated firmware for some primes from 14/1.8 to 135/1.8 (2019-07-18). It says:
Quote:● It has improved the AF speed.
● It has improved the AF accuracy when the Face Detection setting is turned on, while using AF.
● With the Sony α9 or Sony α6400, it has corrected the phenomenon whereby the AF stopping position occasionally had a variation when shutter was half pressed repeatedly during auto focusing on the same subject. * For customers who have Sony α9, please update the camera’s firmware to Ver.5.00 or later.

SIGMA 135mm F1.8 DG HSM | Art for Sony E-mount firmware Ver.02 is available for update at the following site.

So, even if it's only a tube full of air behind the normal lens, Sigma develops firmware for the mirrorless cameras. At least for the ones that matter - who buys Nikon anyway...?  Rolleyes

Ephotozone has reviewed it here:

https://www.ephotozine.com/article/samya...view-33409

  they write:
Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 FE Performance.

Sharpness is very impressive throughout the aperture range. It is also very even across the field, the actual figures being very close indeed. Centrally, sharpness is excellent from f/1.4 all the way through to f/11. Edges virtually match the centre and are also excellent all the way from f/1.4 through to f/11. Diffraction does reduce the sharpness slightly at f/16 but it is still of a very good standard.

Somewhat different results from the two sites ....... I've always found Ephotozine to be generous with their resolution tests ...... for whatever reason .....

but then Lenstip doesn't use any sharpening ..... so maybe the result lies somewhere  in between!

The lens performs very well anyway, in the lenstip-verse, for a 85mm f1.4. Impressive lens, with ho-hum bokeh?

Not the lens for me then (apart from the wrong platform), as I find rendering more important than extreme sharpness.

I've seen both of these reviews, but the EPZ results are, as often is the case, rather too good to be true (not the first time it happens, as David has rightly pointed out). In any case I trust Klaus and Markus more than I do even Lenstip, let alone EPZ. Smile

I saw no reference to "Ho humm bokeh" in the LT review BC.

In fact in Christopher Frost's review his examples of bokeh  look very good to me .......
...... although his sharpness examples on FF show some weaknesses in the corners ..........

..........yes a very nice lens indeed at it's price point !!

When close enough to the subject, the bokeh looks smooth. That probably is due to the big aperture. But a bit further away...
http://pliki.optyczne.pl/samyAF85FE/sam85_fot03.JPG ho hum.

Look at those windows for instance. Ho hum.
A smeary quality in some other images.

the windows shot was at F2 ...... although there is some doubling of the frames the overall bokeh looks OK to me ...... maybe not the best ....... but this is a portrait lens and will probably be bought by those who are struggling to justify €1,500 for the Sony.

... now Samyang should do the Canikon DSLR version .... it would sell like hot cakes !!
