To remove the mirror Nikon would also have to abandon the optical viewfinder. At least for FX that doesn't make sense yet, IMO. Even compared to an EVF with large resolution (like Sony just introduced) a large optical viewfinder is still superior most of the time.
Regarding the phase AF on the sensor: what works well on a small sensor (and with dedicated lenses specifically designed for this sensor) does not necessarily function well enough on a larger sensor (with light hitting the sensor at different/large angles).

Well, have you ever look at 5x4" or 8x10" ground glass. The 35mm optical VF has always been small dimmy and crappy.
My best landscape picture are made in life view and jacket over the LCD screen, tripod and MF lens. /almost identical to lrage format setup/
This works fine for me it is my persobal opinion.
PS I don't get your remarks over corner AF. The essence of PH is make two arrows from focus point to two lens aperture borders. I don't see any limitations to make AF point at any point of focal plane. Technically any old fashion PD lens should work at any point of focal surface.
Photographically and esthetically - I wonder who needs focus point in the image corner?
