The question is where is the optimal point for MP counts? The vast majority of photographers are not physicists or electronic engineers so lack a decent understanding of the basics involved however much they read the simplified descriptions on the web. A more technical response might be "for a given technology type there is an optimal MP for some output quality criteria, which may be skewed by requirements for other factors."
I think the claim of 36MP is more a shock because it is such a radical direction change from the D700 if it should be true. Would it be more acceptable if it was called the D700x or D800x? Leaving room for a "lower MP/faster" model to actually follow the D700 space?
