Ian, I did try -10 and it looked worse.
Today I re-tested and found that 16 and 24mm are OK but the problems at 35mm can be verified.
For 35mm, when I re-focused on something 5cm in front of the initial focusing point I found that that awful problem in my example went away to some extent.
I am going to re-test everything and wil report back in a day or two.
