Thank you for teaching, Markus.
It seems hard to find a new copy of this lens. In every place that I have contacted it is out of stock. In one place they have a 1.5-year-old one---new (they claimed) but produced in June 2010, but I worry that aging affets the coating and lubricant somehow. I am still searching.

Hi Frank,
No need to worry about that, lenses generally last a long time and/or many shots before needing new lubrication, and coatings normally don't deteriorate by themselves. Furthermore, produced in June 2010, probably means it only got to the shelves about a year ago anyway.
Do note that lenses get produced in batches: there often are only very few production lines in a lens manufacturing plant, and machines need to be retooled for each different lens produced, which is a costly and time consuming exercise. This means that lenses which are sold a lot may well be produced several times a year, but lenses which are more specialist and/or costly items once a year or even less.
Kind regards, Wim
