I wouldn't compare it to the epl-3; I think a better comparison is the ep-1 (low end) or gx1 (high end). So one thing that occurred to me is this summer I was shopping for a little camera for a trip and I skipped over the s95, g12, and xz-1; and ended up with a super zoom (sx230) because i wanted a longer lens. If I had to do it over i might have seriously considered the ep-1 (esp at $400) though I would still want a longer lens. The thing is that I wanted something I could toss into a jacket pocket and not worry about - and cheap enough that I didn't care if it was ruined (water and stuff). The G12 (to me) is too large; the s95 and xz-1 were the main contenders; the s95 was small but the lens was too slow to effectively use the larger sensor; the olympus fixed that issue but was larger - so i cave in and went with the sx230. The sx230 is not bad; but definitely a deep step down in image quality.
So now we have the Canon g1x. The problem 'I' have with it is the same problem I have with the G12; butt he G12 seems to sell well so I suspect canon is targeting the G12 market. For me personallly this camera doesn't really hit any of my markets. However, the micro 4/3 doesnt' really fit my model because of slow lenses (though the new 12f2 and 45f1.8 along with the 20f1.7 and 25f1.4) fill the void if you don't mind lens swapping (I was hoping for the old 14-55 or 12-60 instead of the new 12-60).

Now we have the fuji and nex (the nex for sure has my interest because I can use my old (fast) c/y lenses easily; the fuji less is known in this area. I guess the primary area the u4/3 wins (over nex and fuji) is lens selection but clearly the nex and fuji have better image quality and with evf it is much easier to manual focus (though the ep-3 is said to have extermely fast and accurate auto-focus).
Anyways - to be honest i'm not sure cameras like the G12 and new GX-1 will sell on common sense; I think they sell on marketing and habit. E-PL3 has a certified crappy sensor, low-res LCD, bad ergonomics, no built-in flash or viewfinder.
The features set of the G1X is fine and attractive for many people. I think it all depends on pricing. If they price it like the GX1 + EVF + 14-42mm PZ ($1200), then they won't move a lot of units. If they price it like Fuji X10 or a bit more ($600~$700) then it will sell in heaps.
Edit: I just saw the price. $800 MSRP. It's going to be a success.
