Some words of advice:
1. Worked with 3 T2i's, 2 worked great- the third one had bad chromatic abberation and in video mode shut down after two minutes because of heat issues? maybe. Test yours out, make sure you get it from somewhere reputable. Canon is a great friendly company with a couple lemons that come off the assembly line- same for the lens.
2. Ask all of your old family members if they have old lenses laying around. Since you are looking to save money and trying to get to know what focal length you eventually want; try to get old lenses from your Grandpa or Uncle, whatever. This really helped me in the past.
3. If quality isn't critical, try Minolta. My local photo store can't get rid of their old Minolta lenses and sells them dirt cheap. I have never heard anything awful about Minolta glass and it could be a way to get a lot for almost no money.
4. If you do video work, the Tamron Af 17-50 sells for relatively cheap and has a positive review for price on this site.
