I think the logic was:

Given that 85mm f/1.4 on crop sensor is approximately equivalent to 135mm f/2 on full frame, if the 85mm lens can focus closer than the 135mm lens, going for the 85mm on crop would have additional capability over going for the 135mm on full frame.
