You are correct in pointing out that one can still get good results even when a certain area is not optimal. Life is not about trade-offs, however, life is about reproduction to ensure the survival of the species.
However, here we are talking about the thickness of a filter design to limit the performance of certain lenses. Not about how a less than perfect lens still can be a joy to use. A fundamental difference, in my opinion.
