Luck? You don't need luck. You just need to point the lens at a number of objects at various distances and apertures and so on. It's not rocket science to tell if a lens is good, bad or indifferent.
Anyways, I think 24/36/54 are winning numbers. Being able to get plenty pixels from shooting 1:3, 4:3 and 5:7 means that this 3:2 ratio we have been made to shoot for 50 years is finally at an end.
Markus, I don't know why you want to skip the D800. This is going to be the yardstick for the next three years with a lot of interest. I don't think many people have the D3x, and in anycase it "only" has 24MPs.
