It was not a valid argument then, and it still is not.
Diffraction does not increase with resolution of the sensor, diffraction happens in the optics. A projected image will always have the same amount of diffraction softening, whether it is done with a 6mp sensor or a 60mp sensor.
The only valid point one can make is that with higher resolution sensors, the gains in captured resolution depend on the used aperture. So what if one does not have any more resolution gains at f8 (just an example figure). One still gains more at smaller apertures.
