Can someone please explain why LV and manual focusing is needed for landscape photography?

Do people realise that if they put a 10 stop ND filter on say a D300 the AF system still works even on an overcast day?

I consider myself as a serious landscape photographer and I have never used LV for landscapes. (for other things I have of course)

Look, you don't just turn up at a place when the light is too dark to see anything. You get there early and do all your compositons and so on. Here you lock in the focus using the AF-On button and the job is done. So when the light is completely gone but you want to do a super slow shutter speed you already have the focus locked.

Trying to use LV and manual focus in this situation makes no sense.

So, so what if Fred M can't see in the dark. Who can?

I agree with your comments about the preperation and timing... But if one has nice MF lenses with longer FLs, which by all means can be used to shoot in landscapes, magnified LiveView is required for a precise focusing. Using MF is a personal choice and I think the focus confirmation dot is not user friendly compared to a magnified LiveView.

So, yes, magnified LiveView works like a charm for macro applications, but I think it's not an odd thing to use it in landscapes also.
