I think they have. These multiple fresnel type lenses are great for making a lens a lot lighter and shorter, are fine when used with film, but on digital they require an expert hand at postprocessing - digital is just too sharp to obliterate the rendering side effects of these lenses.
The 70-300 DO was always praised over here as a stealth lens: it doesn't really look as long as it is, and it is black too <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />.
