Although the control layout mimics the S95, the RX100 spec seems even more like they are taking a shot across the bow of Nikon's J1.
RX100 dimensions: 101 x 58 x 36 mm
J1 dimensions (no lens): 106 x 61 x 30 mm
RX100 lens range: FL 10-37mm f/1.8-4.9 (equiv. 28-100mm f/4.9-13.4)
J1 kit lens range: FL 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 (equiv. 27-82mm f/9.5-15.3)
RX100 sensor: 1" x 20.2MP
JI sensor: 1" x 10.1MP
Nikon was using Sony sensors for the longest time, but they switched to Aptina for the J1/V1 (and also are have apparently started using them in some of their newer APS-C bodies and rumours are that Aptina will be in the D600 full-frame).
So, this seems like a direct response to Nikon for them dancing with another partner.
Anyways, maybe good news for Pentax fans, for Pentax seems to be firmly in lock-step with Sony's sensor business. Hopefully, the next generation Q has this 1" sensor. (My personal theory is that the reason the current Pentax Q got stuck with a smaller 2/3" (IIRC) sensor was that Sony wouldn't produce one a bigger one just for them and/or they couldn't get a bigger 1/1.7" sensor from anyone else (Canon, Olympus, Panasonic, etc.) so in the end they were forced to make do with what Sony was offering.)
