With camera there are two things - algorithms quality & speed of algorithm execution.
Only first can be improved via firmware, while second usually requires sensor and/or processor upgrade.
Oly advertised that they gained AF speed with extra processor & double FPS sensor readout.
But lens will always set a limit how fast things would be.
