I want to replace my Ricoh GX100 so I'm searching for a new compact camera. So far I have bought an Olmypus XZ-1 and a Sony GX100.
The Olympus has a bad sensor / processing and I don't like the jpgs in 100% even at base ISO, but an amazingly good lens. The RX100 has a fantastic sensor / processing (for its tiny 2,2µm pixels) and the lens is sharp in the centre. Sadly the lens falls completely apart in the corners and close ups at "28mm" are a bad joke.
It's a spec. paper lens and you have to accept compromises for the small size.
Video on the RX100 seems to be quite good imho (but I'm not an expert here)
I miss some functions like intervall shooting...
I'm a jpg shooter and didn't try RAW yet.
Charging via micro USB is very cool for me. It uses the same cable as my smartphone and I can use my solar charger. The Olympus XZ-1 uses a proprietary USB cable connection
Travelling weight is camera PLUS accessories. Imho the RX100 is not really small enough for standard trouser pockets, I do not see much difference in pocketability between GX100, RX100 and XZ-1.
I'm not sure if I will keep it...
I tried the small but very good Ricoh DW-6 0,79x converter and it works on the XZ-1 and also on the RX-100 (just holding it in front of the lens). From the first tests quality is fine on the XZ-1 but corner softness of the RX-100 lens also has its impact when used with the wide converter (didn't expect otherwise)
I would say that the RX100 is a very nice camera for social / party shots, but maybe not perfect for the landscape / travel shooter. Maybe the sensor/processing on the next 1/1,7" generation (EX2F, LX7, XZ-2?) will improve and imho those cameras have significantly better lenses, at least in the image corner and when trying to focus close.
