In addition, I think the biggest problem is really the sensor limit at longer distances, which is easily forgotten when pixel peeping. Once details are recorded on anything less than, let's say, 10 pixels, there generally just isn't any detail.
Even so, some lenses do indeed better at long distance than other lenses do. In the Canon camp, from an UWA POV, there is nothing that beats the TS-E 17 in this regard, f.e.
