Thanks Klaus... Even though I already took the trip and returned back, your comments are still useful under this topic <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='
' />/>... I can confirm all of them except for the "tele usage" part... Although we had hazy/misty landscapes, a high contrast versatile 70-200mm zoom was what I looked for most of the time. I don't have the 70-200mm f/2.8 but more than that heavy brick, the new 70-200mm f/4 could be great I must say. The wide angle does it's job in close distance rice fields but most of the time I was photographing long distance landscapes and 70-200 was really the FL to go. That said, I can't deny that the crop abilities of the D800 in post processing. It helps a lot for images taken with shorter FL.
135mm f/2 DC was the lens I used most of the time in market places. 135mm is fast obviously, and has a lot of CA but it gives all you need for portraits: suitable FL (head + torso), sharp, very pleasing bokeh and nice color rendering. I switched the 135mm with the VL 90mm depending on the light intensity.
The market places were really challenging in terms of lens choice: one could imagine that wider lenses (e.g. 35mm or 50mm) would do, but it all depends on the place, people, light and of course what you have mounted on the camera when the exact moment to take the picture comes. Mostly I used 50mm and 135mm combo, sometimes 50mm & 90mm and rarely 35mm and 135mm... The nature of light in North Vietnam (low contrast) is quite useful for portraits but the large conical hats people wear doesn't help by means of accurate metering. With that respects, thanks to specific area selection possibilities in post processing.
I used portable storage for back-ups incase I could run out of CF cards. The one I used (NextoDi) was quite fast and reliable, with a bit of confusing behaviour concerning backups for same card / different days.
