For me, 36mp is more than I need, but it's not only the sensor when we choose DSLRs. One of the good things about carrying 2 of them was the chance to compare both. The D800 has better raw outputs in terms of DR, tonal range and it looks like the matrix metering works better. I can't say there's a difference in Auto WB but metering is improved. Moreover, D800 can do better AF in low light (mine has no left AF sensor issues, and I had fine tuned the AF before the trip) and the VF shows what you'll be seeing on the image. What makes me (still) think about the D800 is the fact that after processing of 40-45MB nef files, I mostly downscale to 1800x1200 pixel jpegs. So in the end, both for viewing on screen or for A4 prints this resolution gives all I need (for now). So coming back to your practical question, yes 36mp is much more than I need.
The new D600 was announced before we leave for the trip and the D800 was not bought yet. But I had concerns at that time about some specs of it and it was brand new with no user reports. But the 24mp sensor with that price sounded quite right... Nevertheless, the choice was made and I'm happy with the new toy... But definitely I will be happier after I upgrade the hard- & software.
After that much said about the camera, here's one of the outputs (16-35mm f/4 @ 18mm f/5.6, 1/125s, ISO 400):
