Let's play Thom for a second.
I predict and I write it here, for the record (may I be right!) that the Nikon 1 system will see a rapid decline. (funny game)
I think the modest entrance of Canon in the dance, while totally unconvincing this far, is going to help Fuji & Sony in setting an "average" quality expectation for mirrorless cameras. An average level that MFT will have to struggle a little to keep up with if they want to respect their size/quality ratio and as Sony & Canon eventually decide to actually make lenses for their systems rather than bodies. Helped they are by their headstart that allowed Pana & Oly to phase their lens lineup. Phase 1 was "kit lens & average crap". Phase 2 is the X lenses for panasonic and the 12,17,60,75 and rumored 40-150mm f/2.8 for Olympus. An om-d or a cheap epl5 with a X 35-100 is a hugely convincing tiny combo.
The novelties of Nikon are just that in bodies that are (subjectively) extremely ugly and not all that small. I really can't see them succeed for so long, even with their properly targeted soccermoms. I'm staying vague here :-p. But I could see Nikon do some kind of "cool surprise" like sony did with its RX1. Something unquestionnably cool.
End of prediction.
