some time back i had a Tokina AT-X 300 f/2.8pro for d2x (a 2.8 plump sized version of the above) - it made lovely pictures -
it was super solid, short and fat and weighted so too, and really attracted attention as a street lens for those close-ups where you particularly want the passing stranger to notice and look at the lens :-) - it was a star in its own right and the heavy-metal screw in lens hood was old school too…. but it flared like a mad thing, so no pointing it near the sun…..
it was very cheap for such a good lens and one i should have kept as a classic
