Taking the EF 35/2 for comparison, it is the same diameter but 3cm shorter than the Zeiss, if measured to the flange and not including the bayonet. I guess the question is how much benefit could there have been for the reduced flange distance? Also the Canon is a budget lens anyway, so it is not unexpected for a premium lens to gain some size in the process.
Zeiss generally has targeted the higher end of the market. Small size isn't their thing.
