As for the filters: An ND filter is somthing I could have used a couple of times, but the polarizer is a different thing. As you already said, popo: With such a wide angle there's a lot of sky to cover and depending of the angle of sun I got nearly everything from no polarizing effect to maximum in one picture. Don't like that too much.
Steep price, true. But depending from it's performance, especially flare resistance it might be worth to pay for some specialists. I still like the Nikkor very much, especially for interiors where flare is hardly an issue, it's great to have it.
